RE | CLAIM
This unique performance seeks to explore a complex and timely question: Who owns culture?
Kalanidhi Dance is proud to present at a new program, RE | CLAIM, in collaboration with Opera Lafayette.
About the Production
Who owns culture? This question is forefront in this groundbreaking program that examines the national origins of 19th-century Eastern-inspired French music. The internationally acclaimed Algerian early music group Ensemble Amedyez makes its North American debut with Opera Lafayette to present a program of traditional Algerian melodies, first as they were interpreted by French Romantic composer Francisco Salvador Daniel, and then in their original, authentic form. Sharing the stage will be longtime Opera Lafayette collaborator Kalanidhi Dance, presenting both traditional Indian classical dance and ballets from Félicien David’s Lalla Roukh, a love story set in Kashmir.
Art historian Gülru Çakmak will give a Pre-Show Discussion on the Turkish painter Hamdi Bey and host a Post-Show Talkback with soprano Amel Brahim-Djelloul (Ensemble Amedyez) and choreographer Anuradha Nehru (Kalanidhi Dance).
