“ ... the Kalanidhi dancers in the widow scene were a treasure”
In our recent collaboration with Opera Lafayette, Kalanidhi Dance was featured in the second act “La Veuve Coquette”
DC Theater Arts says….
[In] “La Veuve Coquette” ……… the dancing was at its best in this act. Choreographed by Anuradha Nehru and Pragnya Thamire, these five dancers brought much-needed levity and artistry to the piece and captured the best interpretation of opéra-ballet of the night. …… the dancing embraced it [modernity], using percussive and expressive Kuchipudi dance to enliven the story." - KJ Moran Veiz
Wall Street Journal says....
"Each vignette had its own choreographer and style, the most delightful and surprising of which was the Indian wedding staged as an entertainment in the middle of “La Veuve Coquette.” Choreographed by Anuradha Nehru and Pragnya Thamire in Kuchipudi, a classic Indian style, its elegant shapes and sprightly rhythms fit the 18th-century music perfectly." - Heidi Waleson
Opera Gene says.....
"There were four dancers each from two opera companies that Opera Lafayette has worked with before: Kalanidhi Dance, with dances choreographed by Anuradha Nehru and Pragnya Thamire, and the New York Baroque Dance Company, with dances choreographed by Julia Bengtsson, Julian Donahue, and Caroline Copeland. I most enjoyed the dances in the widow and wife scenes. The Indian dance moves with clapping and foot stamping by the Kalanidhi dancers in the widow scene were a treasure, and the fancy and elegant moves at the costume party by the baroque dancers were thrilling."
Washington Classical says....
"Two dance companies shared the choreography of this charming performance. Four dancers from New York Baroque Dance Company, choreographed variously by Julia Bengtsson, Julian Donahue, and Caroline Copeland, provided the expected sorts of French steps and movements, all gorgeously. Four women from Kalanidhi Dance, choreographed by Anuradha Nehru and Pragnya Thamire, introduced Indian classical dance seamlessly into the mix." - Charles T. Downey
